It stands, in my view, at the highest level of psychoanalytic Dictionaries, and represents, for American psychoanalysis, what in the past LaPlanche and Pontalis did with their Dictionary for French analysis: the presentation of a particular, fundamental contribution to international psychoanalysis and the behavioral sciences.

Having studied various psychoanalytic dictionaries in English, German, French and Spanish, the present book in my view, is an original, superb contribution at the highest level. This edition of Psychoanalytic Terms and Concepts deserves as wide an audience as possible.

For the seasoned clinitian, it is nothing short of a superb review course, i. Its definitions and explanations are so clear, well-researched, and devoid of the jargon so typical of psychoanalytic writing that it is also an essential read for the psychoanalytic neophyte.

This is the second edition of the American Psychoanalytic Association's glossary of psychoanalytic terms and concepts. It is truly a group effort, with 74 authors contributing to the definitions and descriptions of frequently used psychoanalytic terms. The new edition adds three contributors, one new term, subtle revisions and polishing of most terms, and separate indexes for the glossary terms and for terms not to be found under their own heading. The glossary is an important public-information effort initiated by the Association's Committees on Public Information and Indexing to clarify for the lay public, scientific reporters, and professionals alike the current definition, status, and usage of terms that are often misunderstood and misused. As such, it has been singularly successful and is of value to all with any interest in psychoanalytic thinking and information.

Concepts of "the self" in psychoanalytic theory have important philosophic underpinnings which may not be adequately appreciated. Both self psychology and ego psychology, with their contrasting positions on the self as a mental structure, retrace paths taken by Western philosophy beginning at least with Hume and Descartes. They reflect traditional philosophic questions, notably of a homuncular self internal to consciousness and the isolation of the subject from other selves. Psychoanalysis has not utilized Hegel's conception of the intersubjective origins of the self, in which the self emerges only in an encounter with another subject, although this approach is implicit in the work of Winnicott on the mother-infant dyad. This movement from a one- to a two-person psychology also presents conceptual problems, as illustrated by the psychoanalytic theories of Sartre and Lacan, who take up opposing positions on the status of consciousness and on intersubjectivity in the formation of the self. Sartre's phenomenology, with its emphasis on the questing nature of the subject in search of an identity, resonates with contemporary theories of narcissism in which the painful isolation of self from self-affirming and mirroring objects is central to clinical practice.

During the s, Freud worked with Austrian physician and physiologist Josef Breuer in studies of neurotic patients under hypnosis. Observing that most patients talked freely without being under hypnosis, Freud evolved the technique of free association of ideas. The patient was encouraged to say anything that came to mind, without regard to its assumed relevancy or propriety. Noting that patients sometimes had difficulty in making free associations, Freud concluded that certain painful experiences were repressed, or held back from conscious awareness.

Although it has been nearly 80 years since the passing of Sigmund Freud, his work and theories continue to leave a mark on psychology today. He is often described as one of the most influential thinkers in psychology history as well as one of the most controversial. While many of his theories have not stood the test of time, students continue to learn about his work and the influence that it had on psychology and current approaches to the study of human behavior. In this study guide, explore some key questions about Freud and his psychoanalytic theories, learn some of the important terms and definitions, and take a quick quiz to test your understanding.
