Crude oil derives, by way of geological processing, from organic material initially buried in sediments at the bottom of ancient lakes and oceans. Crude oil formed at depth in a sedimentary basin migrates upward because of lower density. If the oil approaches the surface, it cools and comes in contact with groundwater. At the oil-water interface, anaerobic microorganisms degrade the oil in the absence of oxygen. The progressive loss of metabolizable molecules from the oil leads to an increase in viscosity and eventually results in a tarry residue that clogs the pores of the strata through which the oil had been migrating.
It may be found in natural deposits or may be a refined product, and is classed as a pitch. Before the 20th century, the term asphaltum was also used. The largest natural deposit of asphalt in the world, estimated to contain 10 million tons, is the Pitch Lake located in La Brea in southwest Trinidad , within the Siparia Regional Corporation. Its other main uses are for bituminous waterproofing products, including production of roofing felt and for sealing flat roofs. In material sciences and engineering, the terms "asphalt" and "bitumen" are often used interchangeably to mean both natural and manufactured forms of the substance, although there is regional variation as to which term is most common. Worldwide, geologists tend to favor the term "bitumen" for the naturally occurring material. For the manufactured material, which is a refined residue from the distillation process of selected crude oils, "bitumen" is the prevalent term in much of the world; however, in American English , "asphalt" is more commonly used.

The physicochemical properties and composition of bitumens extracted from three different areas of the Pasar Wajo deposit, Indonesia have been comprehensively studied. It has been found that the bitumens are classified as asphalt in terms of density and oil content. Characteristic features of the composition of the bitumens are low concentrations of sulfur and trace elements and the lack of normal-chain hydrocarbons. On the basis of data on the composition and physicochemical properties of bitumen, possible processing routes, namely, the manufacturing of binders for road and construction purposes have been suggested. Investigating the rheological properties of crumb rubber modified bitumen and its correlation with temperature susceptibility. There is substantial evidence on the advantages of using crumb rubber in enhancing conventional bitumen properties, gaining environmental protection and boosting industrial-economical benefits. Thus, the use of this ingenious additive in bitumen modification through sustainable technology is highly advocated. The main objective of this research is to investigate the effects of different blending conditions of time and temperature and various crumb rubber contents on the properties of bitumen binders.
Firstly, the obtained samples were subjected to a short and long-term aging process using a rotating thin-film oven test and pressurized aging vessel, respectively.
