Professor John Tomlinson produces world-leading research on the cultural dimensions of the globalization process. His research findings influence policy at an international level, shape professional and public understanding of the consequences of globalization and encourage public debate about international cooperation. He has shaped cultural practitioners' understanding of the cultural consequences of globalization through presentations to cultural bodies such as Impakt Arts Festival Utrecht and the Royal Institute of British Architects RIBA.
Globalization and Culture
Cultural homogenization is an aspect of cultural globalization , listed as one of its main characteristics, and refers to the reduction in cultural diversity through the popularization and diffusion of a wide array of cultural symbols—not only physical objects but customs, ideas and values. Cultural homogenization can impact national identity and culture, which would be "eroded by the impact of global cultural industries and multinational media". Some scholars like Arjun Appadurai note that "the central problem of today's global interaction [is] the tension between cultural homogenization and cultural heterogenization". John Tomlinson says, "It is one thing to say that cultural diversity is being destroyed, quite another to lament the fact. Tomlinson argues that globalization leads to homogenization.

John Tomlinson The agenda before us in this colloquium is both an extensive and a tough one. Although our immediate focus is European culture, as we are all aware, this can only be understood in the context of more general questions about the nature of modern, increasingly globalized cultures. Our deliberations therefore necessarily range across : the issue of the constitution of cultural identity, the question of cultural universalism and human rights, the way to address religious fundamentalism, how to account for new ways of social interaction, the impact of globalization, the new information culture and knowledge-based society. Frankly, I would strongly advise my postgraduate students against tackling anything more than fraction of this agenda in the three or four years of study for a PhD - and we have a little under two days. But the reason why we need to take on board this almost impossible agenda is because all of these issues interconnect in important ways. This connectivity is, indeed, one of the defining features of the sort of culture that we all now inhabit, not just as national or as European citizens, but, as it were, as citizens of a global modernity.
Cultural Globalisation: Placing and Displacing the West
In recent decades, many regions of the world have seen a marked increase in economic development due to the process of globalization as states have opened their borders to international markets, allowing for multinational corporations, non-governmental organizations, and foreign state actors to have an increasingly powerful influence over traditionally domestic matters. With this development and the advance of technology, media and communication have had the ability to reach regions of the world, which may have never been exposed to other cultures in the past. Undoubtedly, this has had an impact on the culture and societal norms of countless cultures as dominant world cultures expand their realm of influence through such media as TV programs and the internet. Furthermore, it will examine whether this trend of globalization will advance the creation of a singular global culture. The debate of whether the erosion between traditional culture and the strengthening of a global culture is of particular concern as within recent history many groups, who are often termed minorities to the more dominant cultures, are concerned with the loss of their individuality, way of life, and even their national sovereignty.
