The book is an assemblage of self-consciously ironic "quotable quotes" about love, beauty, fame, work, sex, time, death, economics, success, and art, among other topics, by the "Prince of Pop ". Warhol signed two book contracts in with Harcourt, one for The Philosophy and the second for a biography of Paulette Goddard , which was never completed. Much of the material is drawn from taped interviews Hackett did with Warhol specifically for the book, and also from conversations Warhol had taped between himself and Colacello and Brigid Berlin. Warhol promoted the book in September on a nine-city U. In October , an audio tape of publicly unknown music by Lou Reed , based on the book, was reported to have been discovered in an archive at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. These early drawings lay the groundwork for many of the techniques and approaches he would use throughout his career. This portion of the exhibition includes delicate, gilded collages and sketches of shoes for the Miller Shoe Company, and illustrations for publications such as Glamour Magazine and The New York Times, as well as personal, little known drawings, often with homoerotic subjects. The first half of the exhibition opens with his best known work from the creatively active period of —68, with his earliest paintings such as Dick Tracy and Superman , followed by the groundbreaking, iconic Pop Art paintings, Green Coca-Cola Bottles , One Dollar Bills and the sculpture, Brillo Boxes , version of original.
