Difference Between Half Wave and Full Wave Rectifier

A rectifier is an electrical device that converts alternating current AC , which periodically reverses direction, to direct current DC , which flows in only one direction. The reverse operation is performed by the inverter. The process is known as rectification , since it "straightens" the direction of current. Physically, rectifiers take a number of forms, including vacuum tube diodes , wet chemical cells, mercury-arc valves , stacks of copper and selenium oxide plates, semiconductor diodes , silicon-controlled rectifiers and other silicon-based semiconductor switches. Historically, even synchronous electromechanical switches and motors have been used. Early radio receivers, called crystal radios , used a " cat's whisker " of fine wire pressing on a crystal of galena lead sulfide to serve as a point-contact rectifier or "crystal detector". Rectifiers have many uses, but are often found serving as components of DC power supplies and high-voltage direct current power transmission systems.

Full-Wave Rectification and Half-Wave Rectification

In both cases, rectification is performed by utilizing the characteristic that current flows only in the positive direction in a diode. Full-wave rectification rectifies the negative component of the input voltage to a positive voltage, then converts it into DC pulse current utilizing a diode bridge configuration. In contrast, half-wave rectification removes just the negative voltage component using a single diode before converting to DC. From this, it can be said that full-wave rectification is a more efficient method than half-wave rectification since the entire waveform is used. Also, a ripple voltage that appears after smoothing will vary depending on the capacitance of this capacitor and the load.

Printed Half-Wave and Full-Wave Rectifier Circuits Based on Organic Diodes Abstract: Presently, most circuits fabricated using organic materials and printing methods have been adopted directly from solid-state inorganic electronics. However, the characteristics of organic electronic devices can differ remarkably from their inorganic equivalents, and therefore, the performance assumptions made about inorganic devices may not be applicable in organic electronics. In this paper, we report a printed diode-based half-wave rectifier having high yield, good air stability, and 3. Due to the high yield and good performance of the individual diodes, fabrication of more complex devices is possible.

Chapter 3 - Diodes and Rectifiers

Another half cycle of AC voltage (negative cycle) is not used. Only one diode is used which conducts during positive cycle. The circuit diagram of half wave rectifier.
