Research design is the framework of research methods and techniques chosen by a researcher. The design allows researchers to hone in on research methods that are suitable for the subject matter and set up their studies up for success.

Study Design and Statistical Analysis: A Practical Guide for Clinicians

Experimental research is the most familiar type of research design for individuals in the physical sciences and a host of other fields. This is mainly because experimental research is a classical scientific experiment, similar to those performed in high school science classes. Imagine taking 2 samples of the same plant and exposing one of them to sunlight, while the other is kept away from sunlight. Let the plant exposed to sunlight be called sample A, while the latter is called sample B. If after the duration of the research, we find out that sample A grows and sample B dies, even though they are both regularly wetted and given the same treatment. Therefore, we can conclude that sunlight will aid growth in all similar plants. Experimental research is a scientific approach to research, where one or more independent variables are manipulated and applied to one or more dependent variables to measure their effect on the latter.

Statistics

Statistics is the discipline that concerns the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data. Populations can be diverse groups of people or objects such as "all people living in a country" or "every atom composing a crystal". Statistics deals with every aspect of data, including the planning of data collection in terms of the design of surveys and experiments.

When census data cannot be collected, statisticians collect data by developing specific experiment designs and survey samples. Representative sampling assures that inferences and conclusions can reasonably extend from the sample to the population as a whole. An experimental study involves taking measurements of the system under study, manipulating the system, and then taking additional measurements using the same procedure to determine if the manipulation has modified the values of the measurements.

Explore the latest in research, methods, and statistics, including topics in clinical research infrastructure, design, conduct, and analysis. This cross-sectional study examines the concordance between clinical studies posted as preprints and subsequently published in high-impact journals, including key study characteristics, reported results, and study interpretations. This Viewpoint discusses the ethical dilemmas of incidental findings discovered in participants during clinical research studies that use imaging modalities. This Viewpoint from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development emphasizes the need to use existing data sources and develop partnerships, infrastructure, and ethical and regulatory standards to generate data about the safety and efficacy of COVID vaccination in pregnant individuals. This cohort study evaluates whether contemporary machine learning methods can facilitate prediction of death from acute myocardial infarction by including a larger number of variables and identifying complex relationships between predictors and outcomes. This meta-analysis studies the association between cognitive dysfunction and cardiovascular risk factors and cognitive impairment in individuals with schizophrenia. This special communication reviews the benefits and limitations of conducting clinical trials without clinical sites.

This section considers manuscripts that investigate how statistical techniques can impact study results along with manuscripts that propose new statistical methods that have an application in medical research. Estimation that employs instrumental variables IV can reduce or eliminate bias due to confounding. In observational studies, instruments result from natural experiments such as the effect of clinician prefer Authors: Todd A. Content type: Research article.
