The paper reviews the recent applications of piezoelectric materials in structural health monitoring and repair conducted by the authors. First, commonly used piezoelectric materials in structural health monitoring and structure repair are introduced. The analysis of plain piezoelectric sensors and actuators and interdigital transducer and their applications in beam, plate and pipe structures for damage detection are reviewed in detail.

Piezoelectricity is the electric charge that accumulates in certain solid materials such as crystals , certain ceramics , and biological matter such as bone, DNA and various proteins [1] in response to applied mechanical stress. The word piezoelectricity means electricity resulting from pressure and latent heat.

Piezoelectric Transducers and Applications

You will find this article informative and interesting, I hope so. The Piezoelectric transducer is an active transducer. It is generally used to convert mechanical stress or pressure into an electrical signal. These physical quantities cannot be measured directly. Therefore, with the help of piezoelectric transducer, these are converted into an electrical signal first after that used for other purposes like measurement or process control.

New understandings underlying the principles of Piezoelectric Transducers , new technological advances in its applications , and new areas of utility for these transducers made a second edition of this book inevitable. The second edition of Piezoelectric Transducers and Applications includes these new developments together with a deep revision and enlargement of the topics already included in the first edition. It provides a guide for graduate students and researchers to the current state of the art of this complex and multidisciplinary area. The book fills an urgent need for a unified source of information on piezoelectric devices and their astounding variety of existing and emerging applications. Some of the chapters focus more on the basic concepts of the different disciplines involved and are presented in a didactic manner. Others go deeper into the complex aspects of specific fields of research, thus reaching the technical level of a scientific paper. Among other topics resonant sensors, especially bulk acoustic wave thickness shear mode resonators, chemical and bio-sensors, as well as broadband ultrasonic systems are treated in-depth.

Piezoelectric transducers for medical ultrasonic imaging Abstract: The requirements of a transducer for diagnostic applications are illustrated with specific examples, and the material parameters that influence transducer design are discussed. The current status of piezoelectric transducer design and common approaches taken to improve the design are also presented. The acoustic and electrical impedance criteria that must be satisfied in order to design an ultrasonic transducer with broad bandwidth response are described. It is pointed out that the development over the past decade of several different types of composite materials, PVDF polyvinylidene fluoride based copolymers, piezoelectric ceramics with low transverse coupling, and electrostrictive materials offers opportunities to overcome some of the compromises involved in transducer design.

We apologize for the inconvenience...

In our day to day life, we come across various situations where we have to measure physical quantities like mechanical stress applied on metal, temperature levels, Pressure levels etc…For all these applications we need a device which could measure these unknown quantities in units and calibrations familiar to us. The transducer is an electrical device that can convert any type of physical quantity in the form of proportional electrical quantity either as voltage or electrical current. From the large pool of various type of transducer, this article aims to explain about piezoelectric transducers. The definition of a Piezoelectric transducer is an electrical transducer which can convert any form of physical quantity into an electrical signal , which can be used for measurement. An electrical transducer which uses properties of piezoelectric materials for conversion of physical quantities into electrical signals is known as a piezoelectric transducer. Piezoelectric materials exhibit the property of piezoelectricity , according to which on the application of any type of mechanical stress or strain leads to the generation of an electric voltage proportional to the applied stress. This produced electric voltage can be measured using voltage measuring instruments to calculate the value of stress or strain applied to the material.

Horn-Type Piezoelectric Ultrasonic Transducer: Modelling and Applications

Piezoelectric Transducer Working Principle
