It is beautifully and clearly written, and explains all aspects, old and very new, of biomedical engineering in ways that are both exciting to the reader as well as easy to understand. As usual, Professor Saltzman has provided rich context and broad examples; he does an excellent job of weaving in valuable scenarios that are realistic, yet interesting - a great tool for engaging students. There are many creative and useful features to the text: the figures and illustrations provide much value to understanding the material, the problem sets offer both conceptual and quantitative review of the material, and the 'Key Concepts and Definitions' and 'Useful Links' sections at the end of each chapter are very practical for a student new to the field of BME.
Biomedical Engineering Bridging Medicine by Mark Saltzman
A pioneer in the fields of biomaterials, nanobiotechnology, and tissue engineering, Saltzman has contributed to the design and implementation of a number of clinical technologies that have become essential to medical practice today. Saltzman received a B. As a graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT , Saltzman built scaffolds that could be seeded with cells to sculpt new replacement tissues. He also created drug-impregnated implants from polymers that slowly and steadily release medicines for long periods—work that now helps patients in the form of GLIADEL, a chemotherapy-loaded polymer wafer that neurosurgeons implant in the brain to combat glioblastoma multiforme GBM , one of the most aggressive types of malignant brain tumors. He was promoted to Associate Professor in and to Professor in Laurance Fuller Chair in Chemical Engineering.

Updates throughout highlight important advances made over recent years, including iPS cells, microRNA, nanomedicine, imaging technology, biosensors, and drug delivery systems, giving students a modern description of the various subfields of biomedical engineering. Over quantitative and qualitative exercises, many new to this edition, help consolidate learning, whilst a solutions manual, password-protected for instructors, is available online.
The following list includes a selection of resources related to biomedical equipment technology available from the L. Tyree Library. If you would like to have one of these books sent to you at an SF Center, please place a hold on the item in the library catalog.
