Rene Descartes - Discourse on Method and Meditations on First Philosophy.pdf

It is best known as the source of the famous quotation "Je pense, donc je suis" " I think, therefore I am ", or "I am thinking, therefore I exist" , [1] which occurs in Part IV of the work. A similar argument, without this precise wording, is found in Meditations on First Philosophy , and a Latin version of the same statement Cogito, ergo sum is found in Principles of Philosophy Discourse on the Method is one of the most influential works in the history of modern philosophy, and important to the development of natural sciences. While addressing some of his predecessors and contemporaries, Descartes modified their approach to account for a truth he found to be incontrovertible ; he started his line of reasoning by doubting everything, so as to assess the world from a fresh perspective, clear of any preconceived notions. The book was originally published in Leiden , in the Netherlands. Later, it was translated into Latin and published in in Amsterdam. The text was written and published in French rather than Latin, the latter being the language in which most philosophical and scientific texts were written and published at that time.

Broadview Press has produced an excellent translation of Descartes's famous Meditations on First Philosophy. It is accurate, philosophically sensitive, and it rivals any of the translations currently available. Andrew Bailey's introduction of the text, and his biography of Descartes, is a real plus, and will serve students well. The language is clear, and the supplementary material and notes lay out a cross-section of the interpretive debates, and provide tips for how a reader might approach them. In part four, the most important part of the Discourse, Descartes describes the results of his meditations following the method he previously laid down. Whereas he had earlier undertaken to act decisively even when he was uncertain, he now takes the opposite course, and considers as false anything that is at all doubtful. This way, he can be sure that he holds on only to things that are indubitably certain. He abandons all sensory knowledge, since the senses can deceive, all demonstrative reasoning, since people often make errors in their reasoning, and imagines that everything that has ever entered his mind is just illusions brought on by dreams. Even in doubting all this, however, he observes that he must be something in order to doubt.

Meditations on First Philosophy

Published by Cambridge University Press. Transcribed : by Andy Blunden. Some years ago I was struck by how many false things I had believed, and by how doubtful was the structure of beliefs that I had based on them. I realized that if I wanted to establish anything in the sciences that was stable and likely to last, I needed — just once in my life — to demolish everything completely and start again from the foundations. It looked like an enormous task, and I decided to wait until I was old enough to be sure that there was nothing to be gained from putting it off any longer.

He illustrates the development of this method through brief autobiographical sketches interspersed with philosophical arguments. Therefore, it is not a lack of ability that obstructs people but their failure to follow the correct path of thought. The use of a method can elevate an average mind above the rest, and Descartes considered himself a typical thinker improved by the use of his method.
