Slavery in the United States

Patterns in the intercolonial slave trade across the Americas before the nineteenth century. E-mail: gomalley ucsc. E-mail: aborucki uci. The slave trade within the Americas, after the initial disembarkation of African captives in the New World, has received scant attention from historians, especially before the abolition of the transatlantic traffic. This article examines such intra-American trafficking as an introduction to the digital project Final Passages: The Intra-American Slave Trade Database, which aims to document evidence of slave voyages throughout the New World. This article does not provide statistics on this internal slave trade, as ongoing research will deliver new data.

In the last three decades, gender has become an indispensable category of analysis in the study of slavery in the Americas, illuminating both the day-to-day lives of enslaved and enslaving peoples and ideas about race and slavery. While studying gender means much more than studying women, the literature on enslaved women is especially influential, in part because of gender analysis's origins in women's history and in part because of women's central importance in slavery: women and ideas about them shaped slavery from beginning to end. This article discusses the origins of slavery, the gendered division of slave labour, reproduction in slavery, sexuality, enslaved families, black femininity and masculinity, mastery and white gender identities, and politics. Keywords: slaves , enslaved women , gender analysis , slave labour , reproduction , sexuality , femininity , white gender identity , politics. Gender analysis has also reconfigured the study of politics, and, as is increasingly clear, studying gender means much more than studying women. Still, the literature on enslaved women is especially influential, in part because of gender analysis's origins in women's history and in part because of women's central importance in slavery: women and ideas about them shaped slavery from beginning to end.

Over the course of more than three and a half centuries, the forcible transportation in bondage of at least twelve million men, women, and children from their African homelands to the Americas changed forever the face and character of the modern world. The slave trade was brutal and horrific, and the enslavement of Africans was cruel, exploitative, and dehumanizing. Together, they represent one of the longest and most sustained assaults on the very life, integrity, and dignity of human beings in history. In the Americas, besides the considerable riches their free labor created for others, the importation and subsequent enslavement of the Africans would be the major factor in the resettlement of the continents following the disastrous decline in their indigenous population. Between and , an estimated 6. More than five out of six were Africans.

Abolitionism

Slavery in the United States was the legal institution of human chattel slavery , primarily of Africans and African Americans , that existed in the United States of America from its founding in until the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment in Slavery was established throughout European colonization in the Americas. From early colonial days , it was practiced in Britain's colonies , including the Thirteen Colonies which formed the United States. Under the law, an enslaved person was treated as property and could be bought, sold, or given away.

Abolitionism , or the abolitionist movement , was the movement to end slavery. This term can be used both formally and informally. In Western Europe and the Americas, abolitionism was a historic movement that sought to end the Atlantic slave trade and set slaves free. The British abolitionist movement started in the late 18th century, however, when English and American Quakers began to question the morality of slavery.

Karen Y. Her research explores the interactions between global and local racial formation processes as they relate to African-descended people and communities. Morrison was a Fulbright Research Scholar in Brazil for the — academic year and has begun a second monograph project that examines connections between black pride, racial hybridity, and whitening in postabolition Rio de Janeiro.
