He was thinking about the deaths of his old friends, and feeling sad. From the outside, it might have seemed even stranger that what had drawn the trio together from across the world was their shared interest in an obscure, all-but-forgotten, wartime Nazi engineer and SS general. Hans Kammler had been personally appointed by Adolf Hitler in to work on some very, very strange things indeed. Adam liked him right away, and sat with him. He would also eliminate Tom Cain.

High rates of divorce, often taken to be a modern and western phenomenon, were also typical of medieval Islamic societies. By pitting these high rates of divorce against the Islamic ideal of marriage,Yossef Rapoport radically challenges usual assumptions about the legal inferiority of Muslim women and their economic dependence on men. He argues that marriages in late medieval Cairo, Damascus and Jerusalem had little in common with the patriarchal models advocated by jurists and moralists. The transmission of dowries, women's access to waged labour, and the strict separation of property between spouses made divorce easy and normative, initiated by wives as often as by their husbands. This carefully researched work of social history is interwoven with intimate accounts of individual medieval lives, making for a truly compelling read.

Divorce in Islam can take a variety of forms, some initiated by the husband and some initiated by the wife. The theory and practice of divorce in the Islamic world have varied according to time and place. According to the Quran, marriage is intended to be unbounded in time, as indicated by its characterization as a "firm bond" and by the rules governing divorce. Similarly for a non-menstruating woman, At-Talaq prescribes the waiting period. This is to give the husband time to reconsider his decision. The Quran substantially reformed the gender inequity of divorce practices that existed in pre-Islamic Arabia, although some patriarchical elements survived and others flourished during later centuries.

From the Christian crusades of the Middle Ages to the fatwa on Salman Rushdie at the close of the millennium, the predominately Christian societies of Western Europe and North America have been suspicious and fearful of Muslims. Conversely, Muslim adherents of Islam find much in Western social values and practices antithetical to their tradition. T he arena of conflict between these communities is changing rapidly, primarily due to the technological innovations of the information age and the confrontation of cultures. No longer are geographical boundaries adequate to separate these cultures. At the same time, Muslims of the diaspora are creating religious and cultural enclaves using Arabsat and the Internet, as well as traditional channels. Yet, recent Islamic migrants to Western nations face the dilemma of finding their authentic voice in popular Western culture, balanced against their fears of cultural assimilation and loss of identity. They seek to know how is it possible to move toward the center of Western culture without compromising deeply-held religious beliefs and traditions.

Marriage, Money and Divorce in Medieval Islamic Society by Yossef Rapoport

Through a very meticulous reading in numerous Arabic sources, Yossef Rapoport, author of Marriage, Money, and Divorce in Medieval Islamic Society, challenges the commonplace assumption that women in medieval Arabic society were subordinated to male domination. Drawing from the rich Arabic literature written during the Mamluk period , he not only skillfully depicts marital life in Cairo, Damascus, and Jerusalem, but also reveals novel facts that might undermine common stereotypes of women in medieval Islamic society. For example, not only was there a high rate about 30 percent of divorce in these three Mamluk urban societies, but women were also single-handedly capable of providing for themselves and their children.

In the Medieval times, marriage was quite different than today. Women didn't have a choice as to who they would marry and, most of the time, women didn't even know the man before they wed. However, men were sometimes able to choose their bride. Marriage back then was not based on love; most marriages were political arrangements. Husbands and wives were generally strangers until they first met.

Ndakota… Kadotan… Oktadan… Tandoka…
