The tongue is the most important articulator of speech. This muscle is extremely strong, as it must move food around in our mouths as we chew. Its other biological function is to push the food into a bolus I prefer the less scientific term "glob" , and then push it down the oesophagus to our stomach.

Human speech depends primarily on the production of sound in the larynx, an organ which corresponds to the reed in various musical instruments or to the sound box of a gramophone. To produce this sound bellows are required to blow air through the glottis; these bellows are provided by the lungs, encased in the thoracic cavity, made up of the mobile ribs and the diaphragm. The compound sound produced in the larynx is modified by resonators above and below the glottis and is further altered by various stops, which can interrupt the vibrating column of air or direct it mostly through the nose or out of the mouth, independently or synchronously. These stops are the vocal cords and ventricular bands, the soft palate and nasopharyngeal sphincter, the tongue and fauces and the lips.

It consists of two phases inhalation and 5. Sit up straight. Inhale and, at the same time, relax the belly muscles. Feel as though the belly is filling with air. After filling the belly, keep inhaling. Fill up the middle of your chest. Feel your chest and rib cage expand.

Hold the breath in for a moment, then begin to exhale as slowly as possible. As the air is slowly let out, relax your chest and rib cage. Begin to pull your belly in to force out the remaining breath. Close your eyes, and concentrate on your breathing. Relax your face and mind. Let everything go. Practice about 5 minutes. Phonation takes place when voice is produced in speaking as the expiratory air stream from the lungs goes up through the trachea or windpipe to the larynx.

Feel the tone begin in the breathing muscles. The voice produced in phonation is weak. It becomes strong and rich only when amplified and modified by the human resonators. Resonation is the process of voice amplification and modification. Articulation occurs when the tone produced in the larynx is changed into specific sounds.

This is the result of the movement of the articulators towards the points of articulation. You just clipped your first slide! The field of articulatory phonetics is a subfield of phonetics that studies articulation and ways that humans produce speech. Articulatory phoneticians explain how humans produce speech sounds via the interaction of different physiological structures. Generally, articulatory phonetics is concerned with the transformation of aerodynamic energy into acoustic energy. Aerodynamic energy refers to the airflow through the vocal tract. Its potential form is air pressure ; its kinetic form is the actual dynamic airflow.

EVOLUTION OF THE SPEECH ORGANS OF MAN

From common consumer products such as cell phones and MP3 players to more sophisticated projects such as human-machine interfaces and responsive robots, speech technologies are now everywhere. Many think that it is just a matter of time before more applications of the science of speech become inescapable in our daily life. This handbook is meant to play a fundamental role for sustainable progress in speech research and development.

Articulation , in phonetics, a configuration of the vocal tract the larynx and the pharyngeal, oral, and nasal cavities resulting from the positioning of the mobile organs of the vocal tract e. This configuration modifies an airstream to produce the sounds of speech. The main articulators are the tongue, the upper lip, the lower lip, the upper teeth, the upper gum ridge alveolar ridge , the hard palate, the velum soft palate , the uvula free-hanging end of the soft palate , the pharyngeal wall, and the glottis space between the vocal cords. Articulations may be divided into two main types, primary and secondary. Primary articulation refers to either 1 the place and manner in which the stricture is made for a consonant or 2 the tongue contour , lip shape, and height of the larynx used to produce a vowel. The primary articulation may still permit some range of movement for other articulators not involved in its formation.

For the production of speech sounds we need an air-stream mechanism. The sounds of most languages in the world are produced with pulmonic egressive.

PARAGRAPHThese symbols can represent actuators, sensors, and controllers and may be apparent in most, if not all, system diagrams. The standard notation, varying from letters to figures, is important for engineers to understand because it a common language used for discussing plants in the industrial world. This section covers four main types of nomenclature. The first section describes the use of lines to describe process connectivity. The second section describes letters used to identify control devices in a process.
