Identity and culture are two of the basic building blocks of ethnicity. Through the construction of identity and culture, individuals and groups attempt to address the problematics of ethnic boundaries and meaning. Ethnicity is best understood as a dynamic, constantly evolving property of both individual identity and group organization. The construction of ethnic identity and culture is the result of both structure and agency—a dialectic played out by ethnic groups and the larger society. Ethnicity is the product of actions undertaken by ethnic groups as they shape and reshape their self-definition and culture; however, ethnicity is also constructed by external social, economic, and political processes and actors as they shape and reshape ethnic categories and definitions. This paper specifies several ways ethnic identity and culture are created and recreated in modern societies.

Defining Race, Ethnicity, and Related Constructs

Sociology uses and critiques the concepts of race and ethnicity, connecting them to the idea of majority and minority groups and social structures of inequality, power, and stratification. The sociological perspective explores how race and ethnicity are socially constructed and how individuals identify with one or more. Research demonstrates how they are linked to social position and to political and policy debates about issues such as immigration, identity formation, and inter-group relations including racism. Race and Ethnicity

Ethnicity is the ethnic group or groups that people identify with or feel they belong to. Ethnicity is a measure of cultural affiliation, as opposed to race, ancestry, nationality, or citizenship. Ethnicity is self-perceived and people can belong to more than one ethnic group. An ethnic group is made up of people who have some or all of the following characteristics: - a common proper name - one or more elements of common culture which need not be specified, but may include religion, customs or language - unique community of interests, feelings and actions - a shared sense of common origins or ancestry, and - a common geographic origin. People can identify with an ethnicity even though they are not descended from ancestors with that ethnicity.

Science appears to have focused on the concept of race among human beings through the work of the biological taxonomist Carolus Linnaeus who, in , classified human beings into four categories based upon their skin color: red, yellow, white, and black Ehrlich and Feldman, Linnaeus further distinguished between the races based upon an amalgam of characteristics that he believed were associated with each. Whites, for instance, were said to be innovative, in contrast to blacks, who were deemed to be lazy and careless.
