- Advices and Queries for Isolated Friends (with a traditional understanding of Quakerism)
I have contemplated OYM's Queries and Advices regularly as part of my own spiritual practice for a number of years. I found it useful to significantly re-order the Advices to correspond with the Queries, to add three Queries in part to come up with a once-a-month number of 12 Queries , and to combine the Advices and Queries so that I could contemplate the relevant passages in tandem. I also added a few advices and queries of my own devising, including something regarding online communications.
Introductory and explanatory remarks. An invitation. The texts below have been carefully selected from my readings on Quakerism. Everything here has had a special impact on my thinking; each work stands out as important reference point for me. I've put them online so that they can be used by Seekers, those people who perpetually seek for a better way of living in the world.

After years there are about , Quakers in the world less than 0. There are followers of this NFN website whilst our number of paid-up members of the Network for this year to date are too embarrassingly few to mention. So, what can we say? We want to develop our spirituality and avoid great busyness. In the 21 st century, Friends in Britain have become more outward looking again as they have perhaps been for the last years and social including political concerns and activism have again come to the fore.
British Friends have a little red book called Advices and Queries. The first advices came from the Elders at Balby in Dearly beloved Friends, these things we do not lay upon you as a rule or form to walk by; but that all, with a measure of the light, which is pure and holy, may be guided: and so in the light walking and abiding, these things may be fulfilled in the Spirit, not in the letter, for the letter killeth, but the Spirit giveth life. Since then, the list of advices used by any given yearly meeting has grown and changed. Sometimes a quote from a [spiritually] weighty Friend will be added. Or something that was minuted by a meeting will be included.
A Book of Discipline may refer to one of the various books issued by a Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends , setting out what it means to be a Quaker in that Yearly Meeting. Each Book of Discipline is updated periodically by each Yearly Meeting according to the usual practice of decision making within the Religious Society of Friends. The contents of each book of discipline is agreed on by seeking unity among members of the authoring yearly meeting. Instead of voting or seeking an earthly consensus, the Meeting attempts to gain a sense of God's will for the community. Each member of the meeting is expected to listen to that of God within themselves and, if led, to contribute it to the group for reflection and consideration. Each member listens to others' contributions carefully, in an attitude of seeking Truth rather than of attempting to prevail or to debate. This process can be tedious and lengthy.

The Ministry and Nurture Committee invites each meeting to consider the queries and to develop a written response that describes the insights arrived at during its consideration. Instead we are asking that Friends use the queries that are included in the epistle that the Friends of Color of Friends General Conference sent out at the end of their pre-Gathering meeting this summer. The epistle may be found on the FGC website. Ministry and Nurture is asking that meetings and worship groups read the epistle before meeting to discuss the queries. You can approach the queries as you wish. Some may choose to concentrate on one or two of the questions; others may choose to discuss all of them. The world we live in can leave many of us with broken hearts.
Worship is at the heart of what it means to be a Quaker. Everyone is welcome to join us. You do not have to be a Quaker to attend. The meeting starts when the first person enters the room and sits in silence. During worship someone may feel called to speak, pray or read aloud. Quakers call this ministry. After someone has ministered there is more silence to allow us to reflect on what has been said.
